Fix It Friday: Squashing Sick Days One Cold at a Time!

3–5 minutes

Greetings, friends! It’s Geneva O’Kelley here, hoping to add a little sunshine to your day with our #FixItFriday segment. Today, we’re tackling a challenge that every parent faces at some point: managing sick days for our kids. Whether it’s a common cold or something a bit more serious, here are some tried-and-true tips to help your little ones bounce back faster, and how to keep the rest of the family healthy too!

1. Cozy Comforts: The Power of Rest

First things first, rest is crucial. Create a comfortable, quiet space for your child to recuperate. Think soft blankets, their favorite pillow, and perhaps a nightlight if they need a little extra comfort. Remember, the body heals faster when it’s well-rested. Resist the urge to give in to the old fall back from our own childhoods, daytime television. This can encourage frequent flyer syndrome: a child that is not just “too sick for school” today, but tomorrow, test day, and as often as possible. My kids stay in bed when they stay home. Books, music, and stuffed animals are a sure sign that they will want to go back to school as soon as they are able, and they will spend their time sleeping instead of watching “The Price is Right.”

2. Hydration and Nutrition: Fuel for Recovery

Hydration is key! Encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids, whether it’s water, juice, or a comforting bowl of soup. Nutritious, easy-to-digest foods can also aid in recovery. Think about broths, yogurts, and fruits packed with vitamins. I keep a couple of cans of Chicken Noodle Soup on hand, just in case a cold gets past our home defenses.

3. Doctor’s Note: More Than Just a Formality

Always consult your child’s doctor when they’re sick. A doctor’s note is not just a formality for school; it’s a crucial record of your child’s health and the care they received. Plus, it can be instrumental in catching contagious illnesses early and preventing spread. But why catch flack for an unexcused absence when peace of mind is only a quick doctor’s visit away, especially in the time following COVID. It’s worth the trouble.

4. Preventive Measures: A Stitch in Time

Prevention is always better than cure. Teach your kids the importance of handwashing, proper hygiene, and a balanced diet to bolster their immune system. Regular check-ups and vaccinations are also vital in keeping those nasty bugs at bay. In our house we are sticklers on “Don’t touch your face!”

5. Family First: Protecting the Whole Household

When one member falls sick, it’s a threat to everyone in the house. Disinfect common surfaces regularly, and try to minimize close contact where possible. And don’t forget about self-care for you, the caregiver. Your health is just as important! You can’t pour from an empty cup, so keep your cup full of self-care.

6. Patience and Love: The Best Medicine

Last but not least, a little TLC goes a long way. Your patience, understanding, and love are the best medicine your child can receive. So cuddle up, read them their favorite story, and remind them that this too shall pass. Quick comfort tips: VapoRub on feet under socks and on chests, humidifiers to ease breathing, and a spoonful of honey to soothe a sore throat! Those are my go-to tools for shortening a cold. I keep it all on hand for any sign of illness. Remember, don’t rely only on spray disinfectants, if you can put something through the washing machine, it will be a lot cleaner than just spraying chemicals. That being said, wiping surfaces with disinfectants like doorknobs, light switches, and remotes is always a good idea.

In conclusion, managing sick days is a part of parenthood, but it doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With these tips, you’re well-equipped to handle those sniffles and coughs like a pro.

As always, my friends, enjoy the GLO! Remember, a home filled with love and care is the best remedy of all.
