Festive Greetings, Pug Lovers and Kindness Creators!

The holiday season is a magical time, brimming with traditions and family memories. In our home, we’ve embraced a unique tradition that not only aligns with our budget but also nurtures a lifelong love for reading in our children. This year, we’re excited to share two special books that are fixtures in our holiday tradition: “Mr. Fix It” and “Twas the Night Before Pugmas.”
A New Twist on Santa’s Deliveries
Traditionally, children write letters to Santa to ask for a long list of presents. Toys that they have seen on TV, toys that will break right after they use them once, toys that will become clutter around the house, and more often than not, toys that are so expensive people have to spend ridiculous amounts of money to help Santa bring the magic. When I was a single mom, I remember taking my daughter to see Santa in the mall. She had seen a commercial a few days before for a very expensive toy that was not feasible. Santa promised to make it happen. It took a miracle. Later, as my children got older, the lists were becoming unreasonable. I was struggling. There was no way I could put in my part of the magic without going into serious debt. What is sad is that there are parents everywhere that do this every year, maxing out credit cards to fulfill wish lists for things that their kids don’t need or don’t really want.

So, I broke the mold instead of going broke.
Instead of the usual array of toys, we’ve asked Santa to only bring books. This initiative started out as a budget-friendly approach but quickly turned into a cherished tradition. Each Christmas, our children unwrap the magic of new stories, fostering their imagination and joy for reading.
My kids still get toys, but they come from me and my husband. They know we have a family budget and that they have to be reasonable. It sets realistic expectations and helps them to ask for things they are really interested in that are less likely to end up as clutter around our home. It also helps them to appreciate what they have and to be able to express gratitude to the person who gave them the gift. It’s a lesson in gratitude and a step away from the commercialized holiday frenzy.
