One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest or A Town Full of Chickens

What do you love about where you live?

Living in Yuba City: A Clucking Good Time

Hello, all you lovely people! Today, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. If you’ve ever wondered where all the world’s chickens have migrated to, I’ve got the answer: Yuba City, California. That’s right! It’s a poultry paradise, and honestly, living here is egg-ceptional!

It’s a quiet place. The people are nice. I’ve been here for about twenty years now, so I’ve seen this town go through a lot of changes.

One thing that hasn’t changed, the number of chickens that roam the streets. If anything, the chicken population has probably increased. There are chickens EVERYWHERE. They have even learned to use the traffic lights, so they don’t get run over. You can watch a small flock walk to the corner of a busy intersection, wait for the lights to change and cross.

The Early Bird Gets the… pancakes?

As you’re sipping your morning coffee at the local Ihop, chances are you’ll hear the roosters calling for roll call. It’s like our town alarm clock, only it doesn’t have a snooze button. Why would anyone need one? Those cock-a-doodle-dos are the original wake-up call, predating your fancy iPhones by centuries! They are waiting right outside the restaurant to take care of your pesky leftovers too!

It’s like I’m living in a joke.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

Who knows, but at least he did it safely.

It’s Eggs-actly What You’d Expect

Want eggs for breakfast? How about eggs for lunch? Heck, eggs for dinner too! You can never have too many when you live in Yuba City. Eggs are in such surplus that we’re thinking of making it a form of currency. You can already pay for your car wash in yolks!

Feathers and Fashion

Why bother with Milan or Paris Fashion Week when you can strut your stuff in Yuba City’s annual Chicken Feather Fashion Show? From feathered hats to down coats made from organic, locally sourced plumage, you’ll never look at a chicken the same way again.

If you look up shirts inspired by our town, you will even see that the chicken has been designated the unofficial city bird. They should make it official, they’ve been together long enough to constitute a common law marriage after all.

Chicks and Tricks

Speaking of relationships, let’s talk dating. In a town overrun with chickens, even our romantic terminology has evolved. Here, asking someone if they want to “cluck” is the equivalent of asking to Netflix and Chill. But be careful with your pick-up lines; no one likes a “cocky” attitude!

Yuba City, The Chicken Capital

We’ve got statues of chickens, we have chicken murals, and we’re even in talks to change our town’s mascot from a bear to a brooding hen. Who needs Hollywood’s Walk of Fame when you can take a stroll down Hen House Lane, our very own tribute to the legendary chickens of Yuba City?

My favorite eggs-ellent chicken mural is by Yuba City High School. It’s a rock band of roosters. I suppose it’s the only appropriate way to rock out with your…well, you get the idea.

This Place is For the Birds

Living in Yuba City is the chicken soup for your soul you didn’t know you needed. Sure, the town might not have towering skyscrapers or an ocean view, but who needs that when you’ve got clucking companions at every corner?

Chicken noodle soup, anyone?

My youngest son is obsessed with chickens. One is currently considering our yard for its morning meals and he couldn’t be happier. The only problem is that every time he sees it, he wants to run outside to catch it.

Chickens are pretty good at not being caught by seven year old boys.

Whenever he runs out, I worry he will inspire the dog to follow his lead. I don’t encourage the chicken to stay for the same reason. Chickens are not so good at avoiding smart dogs.

Well, maybe the massive population is a strong argument against that assertion, but I would worry that my dog would chase it at the very least.

So, we don’t encourage its foraging in our yard.

For the time being I’ll enjoy watching my baby boy run happily out into the yard in the mornings. I’ll giggle as I watch a spooked chicken run like hell to get away from him, and I’ll lament not being able to keep it because of my dog.

Happily though, there is not going to be a shortage of birds to watch around this town anytime soon.

Final Peck… I Mean, Peek

There you have it, folks. Yuba City is a place where life is just better with a side of feathers. So come join the coop, you won’t regret it!

As always my friends, enjoy the GLO!
